How to Prepare for a Court Appearance on Assault Charges

Preparing for a court appearance on assault charges would be similar to preparing for any kind of court appearance. In today’s blog article, we are going to talk about how the client prepares for a court appearance on assault (or other) charges.

#1

Do whatever your lawyer has advised you to do. Below, we are going to list some general suggestions. However, your defence lawyer’s advice should always come first.

#2

Try to appear serious and sober. By that we mean, court is not a laughing matter, so loud laughter or smirking for whatever reason is wholly inappropriate. Similarly, aside from prescription medication, you do not want to drink alcohol or do any drugs before appearing in court. You do not want to look sleepy or disinterested. It is very important to convey to the judge that you take the matter of your case seriously. You want to look interested, alert, and completely serious.

#3

Dress appropriately. By this we mean dress conservatively. Wear dark or muted colours. You are not going to a beach party; you are going to court. Appearing this way in court conveys respect for both the judge and the procedures. Even if you do not respect either of them, it is in your best interest to appear that you do.

When you go to court, the judge has all the power. For that reason, it is always a good idea to appear respectful to the judge. Your lawyer will explain this to you but being rude or disrespectful or disobedient in court is never in your best interest. The same holds true whether you are charged with assault or murder or any other serious crime.
