Legal Advice for Assault Charges in Surrey Stemming From Domestic Disputes
It is a shocking statistic that almost half of all adult women in Canada report at least one incidence of domestic violence during their lifetimes, according to the Government of Canada. And do not think for a moment that this number is the worst in the world, as some other countries report twice these numbers. And there is domestic violence against men, too.
Since we know that Surrey, BC has a high crime rate—by some sources it is the highest in Canada—it would follow that there is no shortage of domestic violence and assault charges stemming there from.
So, in today’s blog article, we want to just give you a little advice to help you if you find yourself being accused of assault related to domestic violence in Surrey.
1. Take It Seriously
Never take charges like this lightly. Assault charges, depending on what exactly happened, can have steep penalties. If found guilty you can lose some custody rights over your children, and guilty verdicts can even affect where you can live or travel. Do not ignore these charges.
2. Hire a Lawyer
And not just any lawyer. Hire a lawyer as soon as possible who specializes in criminal defence work and is experienced at defending assault charges. Then rely on your lawyer. Speak honestly to your lawyer and help him/her to help you, by following his or her instructions and answering questions fully and truthfully.
3. Discuss Alternate Penalties
Discuss with your lawyer alternate penalties if you are found guilty, for example, if there is any way you could do community service or pay a fine or attend anger management classes or therapy.
Unfortunately, it is well known that domestic violence is vastly underreported. If you are the victim of domestic violence, seek help right away. The province has a long list of resources. And if you are charged with domestic violence (assault) then hire a criminal lawyer immediately.
